Conversation Next to a Blue Plant 

Iwo Zaniewski made this pastel drawing, Conversation Next to a Blue Plant, sometime after his birth in 1956. Zaniewski is a Polish artist who began his career in the politically charged environment of the 1980s. This work presents us with a seemingly idyllic scene of leisure, yet the figures are rendered in a way that obscures distinct identities. The blurring of individual features can be interpreted as a commentary on the loss of self within social interactions, or perhaps speaks to the collective experience under a unified political system. The figures, indistinct in their gender and features, invite us to consider how identity is both formed and dissolved in our relationships.
