Petrus Josephus Lutgers created this artwork, Hofstede Geynvliet in Loenersloot, using pen and brush in gray. The eye is drawn to the gentle gradations of tone. Note how light dances across the surface of the water, contrasting with the darker, denser forms of the trees and buildings. The artwork has a tranquil, almost classical feel. Lutgers employs a structured composition that is divided into distinct horizontal bands. The waterway in the foreground leads us to the manicured landscaping. A horse drawn carriage sits idly by a building which is flanked by trees in the midground, and the sky provides a backdrop in the upper portion of the image. Semiotically, each of these horizontal layers works as signs in a cultural system. The waterway sign suggests a connection between nature and the people who traverse its surface. The horse and carriage sign suggests a certain economic class or status. The artist uses the medium to invite a dialogue about landscape. It challenges the viewer to consider the interplay between the natural world and human presence.
