This is Ch. Perrin’s print of Gezicht op kasteel Ghlin, made using etching. Look at the image, and how it feels like a memory, or a dream. I love how the artist created depth and texture using only lines. The varying densities of the hatching give a real sense of light and shadow. I'm thinking particularly about the way the artist has used short, vertical lines to create the impression of rippling water, this attention to detail is really delightful. Perrin is so good at capturing the different textures of the landscape, the roughness of the trees, the smoothness of the water. It reminds me a little of some of the landscape etchings of Hercules Segers, who also used etching to create atmospheric and dreamlike landscapes. You can really see how art is a conversation across time, artists responding to and building upon the work of those who came before them. I like that, the idea that art isn’t about fixed meanings, but about ongoing explorations and dialogues.
