This 16th-century Italian maiolica bowl, created by an anonymous artist, depicts the mythological tale of Perseus rescuing Andromeda from the sea monster Cetus. The scene is set against a backdrop of a rocky landscape and blue sky, with the sea monster emerging from the waves. This piece is an excellent example of Italian maiolica, a type of tin-glazed earthenware, which was widely produced in Italy during the Renaissance period and served decorative and functional purposes. This particular bowl, now in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, showcases the exquisite detail and vibrant colors of the maiolica technique.
