Eugene Feldman made this print, Brazilian Landscape, Amazon River, on a sheet of paper using a photographic printmaking technique. Look at those drips and splatters, the deep watery blues, the staccato of slender trees. I can imagine Feldman, layering and manipulating the image, maybe even letting the chemicals react unpredictably—embracing the happy accidents that can transform a print. The texture is so physical, like he’s wrestling with the image, trying to capture a feeling, a memory, or some kind of elusive truth. The way those trees just dissolve into the sky reminds me of Gerhard Richter's blurred landscapes, or even some of the early Impressionists trying to catch a fleeting moment. We are all in a conversation with each other. Painting can allow us to share a way of seeing, and thinking, and feeling.
