Alfred Freddy Krupa made this beautiful piece called 'A Rainy Day’ using ink on paper. I love the way Krupa handles the ink, it’s not overworked. There's a freedom in the application. It's wet, loose, and yet controlled. The brushstrokes vary from thick dark lines to these wispy, transparent washes, creating a sense of depth and atmosphere, so you can almost feel the dampness in the air. Look at the lower part of the image, the curving lines suggest the motion of water, like raindrops hitting a puddle. The way the ink bleeds into the paper gives it a hazy, dreamlike quality. It reminds me of some of the landscape paintings by the older artist, Emil Nolde, who was similarly interested in conveying an emotional response to nature through his brushwork. Ultimately, this piece captures a mood, a moment, and an impression of a rainy day. It’s about feeling, more than seeing.
