Jacob Houbraken created this portrait of Jacob van der Does with pen in reddish brown ink around the 18th Century. It is currently held at the Rijksmuseum. Houbraken's portrait gives us a glimpse into the artistic and social circles of the Dutch Golden Age. Van der Does was himself an artist, continuing a family legacy. This portrait, with its delicate lines and focus on capturing the sitter's likeness, reflects the cultural value placed on individualism. The work invites us to explore the role of artists within Dutch society, how their identities were constructed and perceived, and what social functions were upheld in representing them. By examining archival material, we might uncover more about the complex dynamics of artistic networks and the way their legacy was maintained through institutional preservation.
