Jacobus Fernandus Adolphus Semey made this buffet with two doors on either side of three stacked drawers. Imagine Semey in his workshop, maybe the wood was raw and he was thinking, how can I bring out the essential nature of this material? The buffet has these long, vertical handles and that's kind of cool. I like the colour of the wood too, it's dark and warm. The wood has a very visible grain; you can almost feel the texture. What I love about a piece like this is how the maker engages with the medium, the material. Maybe Semey was thinking about how to find the right balance between form and function. As an artist, you're in an ongoing dialogue with other artists, with the history of art. It’s this constant conversation across time. Like, what’s the essence of a cupboard anyway? Each artist builds on what came before, adding their own voice to the mix. So, it’s all about interpretation. This is what makes art so engaging.
