Wolf Kahn made ‘Pale’ with pastels, and it feels like the process was all about seeing what could happen. There’s this overall mood, right? And then, up close, you see how he gets there. Look at the ground, that horizontal scribble of pale green. It’s totally abstract, but somehow it becomes the ground. The pink in the sky does something similar. It's so thin and washy, it almost feels like a memory of a colour. The whole thing is built from these marks, these little hits of colour that add up to something bigger. For me it's like Guston said, “they are images, images, images, just falling all over the place." It reminds me of Bonnard, with that similar sense of dissolving form. Ultimately, it's like the conversation between artists never ends.
