Alfred Freddy Krupa made this painting, titled Sex, with oil on canvas, and it’s about 100 by 50 cm. The first thing I see is the blue, how it bleeds and drips, like the sky is melting into the trees, or the trees reaching up to grab a piece of it. There are these long, sweeping marks, kind of like a windshield wiper going across the canvas. I wonder what kind of brush he used – maybe a wide, flat one, or even a rag. And the yellow, it’s so bright and cheerful, like sunshine filtering through the leaves. It contrasts with the blue, creating a push-and-pull effect that makes the whole painting vibrate. Check out the lower right corner, where the yellow kind of pools and thickens. It's like a little explosion of color, and it makes me think of the way light can catch on things, creating these unexpected moments of beauty. It reminds me a bit of Joan Mitchell, her way of layering and building up color to create a sense of depth and movement. Art's a conversation, right? One artist talking to another, across time and space.
