This blue and white transferware platter, "Platter," was created by English potter Ralph Clews in 1826. The platter depicts a scene with a building in the background, a boat in the foreground, a female figure on the right and a male figure on the left. The design features the names of the thirteen original colonies in the United States around the edge, making this a highly significant piece of American decorative arts. This piece is a beautiful example of the transferware that was popular in the 19th century. It is currently in the collection of The Art Institute of Chicago.
