Léopold Flameng created this etching, Christus geneest de zieken, which translates to Christ healing the sick. Born in France in 1831, Flameng’s work exists within a very specific cultural and historical context. At the time, Western society often associated illness with moral failing. This etching is both a reflection of faith, and an artistic commentary on how society treats the marginalized. Notice how Christ is positioned centrally, his arms open in a gesture of welcome and healing. This contrasts sharply with the expressions of suffering on the faces of those seeking help. What does it mean for the sick and disabled to be on the margins of society? The artist prompts us to consider the emotional and societal dimensions of compassion, asking us to reflect on the communal responsibilities of care and inclusion.
