Homeward 

Editor: So here we have George Inness's oil painting, "Homeward." It’s definitely a landscape, and the light gives it a hazy, almost dreamlike feel. I’m curious, looking at it from your perspective, how do you interpret this work? Curator: Well, when I look at this, I see a work deeply rooted in its historical moment. Inness painted during a period of rapid industrialization in America. Artists were increasingly concerned with depicting an idealized past as a means to cope with an increasingly modern world. Note the genre painting elements too – it brings forward everyday scenes of life. Editor: So, like a visual poem about simpler times? Curator: Exactly. It's not just a pretty landscape. The man and the cow returning "homeward" symbolize a connection to nature that many felt was being lost, even under threat. Look at the sky and think of the looming industrial presence felt even in rural areas. Inness became deeply interested in spiritualism and the sense of the sublime within landscape which this invokes. Editor: That makes a lot of sense. I initially saw the haze as just an aesthetic choice, but knowing that it could also represent that encroaching modernity, gives the whole piece a new weight. Do you think viewers at the time would have picked up on those references? Curator: Undoubtedly. The late 19th century was a period where debates about national identity and the impact of progress were front and center. Visual art played a key public role and pieces like this became lightning rods in that larger conversation. What do you think about its legacy today? Editor: I’d say that appreciating that context enriches the whole experience of the art. I guess, understanding the past, we can view and engage art much differently. Curator: Precisely. Context isn't everything, but it is definitely key in deciphering not just the aesthetic value of art, but how culture shapes our world.
