This snuffbox, with miniatures representing the Diversions of Love, was created by Jacques Joseph de Gault in the late 1700s. The box is made of gold, and the miniatures are painted enamel on metal. Enamel is a powder, which is fused to a surface by firing, and the gold creates an opulent frame for the delicate scenes. Considered together, the materials speak volumes about elite culture during this period. The exquisite detail of the enamel work, with its classical figures and idyllic landscapes, would have been immensely appealing to wealthy patrons, keen to show off their refinement and taste. Moreover, the snuffbox would have been a perfect accessory, demonstrating its owner's social standing. It represents the height of luxury and the pursuit of pleasure. Though small in scale, it invites us to consider big questions about the relationship between art, craft, and commerce.
