This jasperware cameo, created by the Wedgwood Manufactory around 1775, depicts the Roman god Bacchus, god of wine, flanked by two fawns. Bacchus is depicted as a chubby, naked figure, with a crown of grape leaves, and his two fawns appear to be offering him grapes. The cameo is in a blue jasperware ground, framed in a gold-colored metal. This work exemplifies Wedgwood's mastery of neoclassical style and his ability to produce intricate details in relief on his jasperware. The blue jasperware background was a hallmark of the Wedgwood Manufactory and is a defining feature of this piece.
