Look at those Monument Valley buttes in the background... and those pouting lips! But it's more than just eye candy. I find myself asking, "What's *her* story?" You get a real sense of attitude, don’t you? What kind of mood do you feel when you look at Lucy's expression? Editor: Definitely, a touch of defiance or maybe playful mischief? It seems like the artist wanted to create a confident and charismatic woman. Do you think her gaze challenges our perception of femininity or a stereotypical view of the 'Wild West'? Curator: Precisely! I suspect Galieote's twisting classic symbolism - a pistol, the vast West, a confident woman - to challenge expectations. Maybe she isn't just an archetype. She is an invitation. Almost as though you would stumble on this painting in an old-timey saloon. I find this painting to be humorous with a dash of wit, how about you? Editor: I agree, it’s not a solemn piece! There's a sense of humour in the details like her gloves and neckerchief which are both punctuated with prominent star images. Seeing her brought the idea of female empowerment into a new light.
