William James Glackens painted this riot of color, "Poppies, Lilies and Blue Flowers," probably sometime in the early 20th century using oil on canvas. It's a party of brushstrokes, right? Look at how Glackens has built up the texture, especially in the background, with these short, choppy strokes. The colors are fighting it out, but somehow they all work together, pushing and pulling against each other. It's like he’s wrestling with the paint, trying to pin down the fleeting beauty of these flowers. Check out the reds on that tabletop, so alive with energy. I see him there, trying to capture a moment, knowing it’ll change as soon as he blinks. Glackens reminds me a bit of Bonnard, capturing those everyday moments with a sense of joy. With Glackens, it's never really about perfection. It's about the process, the struggle, and the beauty found in the messy reality of it all.
