Edvard Munch made "Jealousy" with oil on canvas, and you can see it here in Oslo. What strikes me is how Munch lays down the brushstrokes, raw and immediate. Look at that central figure, her face flushed with an almost feverish intensity. You can feel how Munch really dug into that color. It seems like he’s right there in the moment of painting, feeling it all. I wonder what Munch was thinking when he made this. The green face of the guy up front, you almost pity him, he's such a sickly color. It’s like he’s turning green right before our eyes! Maybe Munch was thinking about the theater of life, all the drama and emotions bubbling just beneath the surface. I think all artists are in this ongoing conversation across time, riffing off of each other’s ideas and visions. To me, painting is about embracing uncertainty and seeing where it takes you. There is not one interpretation that is correct, but many.
