Elias Stark made this artwork, *Ganzen bij het water*, using etching. The image is composed through an impressive amount of labor; its detailed execution is reminiscent of traditional methods. With thin, light strokes, a scene with geese by the water comes to life. The textures of the trees, the water, and the fowl plumage are meticulously rendered, which can be fully appreciated when seen up close. In the absence of color, it is the etching technique itself that builds the image, using carefully controlled corrosion and impression, that elevates this print beyond mere representation. The artist would have carefully applied acid-resistant wax to a metal plate, then scratched away areas with a needle. After, the plate was dipped in acid, and finally printed. By appreciating the material labor involved, we can see the value of this work that may have often been overlooked. It is a testament to the artist’s hand, skill, and commitment to his craft.
