Matta made this piece, "Composition XIII," using a printmaking process that feels like a direct line to the subconscious, like automatic writing for the eyes. The texture! It’s all scratchy and layered, with these ghostly mechanical forms floating in a kind of dream space. Look at the way the light seems to glow from within some of the shapes, especially that circle near the top – it’s not just color, it’s like an energy source. The lines are so delicate and yet they create this whole world of implied movement and tension. Matta’s work always reminds me that art doesn’t have to explain, it just has to be. Like a Joan Miró piece, it's a playground of the mind, full of possibilities.
