Matta made this print, Composition XIII, we don't know when or with what. It’s an all-over composition. Look at all those scratchy lines and curious shapes floating in a space. The light from the orbs spreads across the scene as if it’s all happening underwater. I wonder what Matta was thinking? What does it feel like to make an image like this? I imagine he was in a flow, making marks without being too precious, letting the image evolve from some inner sensation. Like automatic writing. He was part of the surrealists, so probably letting his unconscious take the wheel! Artists are always talking to each other through their work, sometimes without even knowing it. I wonder how much Matta knew the work of Yves Tanguy, another surrealist? I see a connection, but with his own flavor. It makes me want to get into the studio and start experimenting myself!
