Matta made this print, Composition III, with ink and color, probably in the mid-twentieth century, and it feels like a diagram of thought itself. The lines are restless, zipping around like ideas searching for a place to land. I love the way he’s built up this world with such simple marks. It’s all lines and planes, really. Look at the way those flat planes are connected by lines, as if they’re floating in space, tethered to some unseen structure. There are pink circles in the center of these planes, like punctuation marks, and they give an extra push to the dynamism of the composition. It reminds me a little of some of Kandinsky’s geometric abstractions, but with a more chaotic energy. Matta's work is an invitation to dive into the messy, beautiful process of thinking and feeling. It’s a reminder that art, like life, is often about embracing ambiguity and uncertainty.
