Jim Goldberg made this photographic print, "7:41 am," sometime around now. It's a stark, grainy image, almost like a memory surfacing. The world seems out of focus in the peripheries, and it's about immediacy, a decisive moment. The high contrast gives it a sense of drama but also vulnerability. Look at the watch, so clear, against the blurred face of the man. It's about time, obviously, but time in relation to the body. The texture of the print itself is important, the way the grain feels almost like skin, like you could reach out and touch it. Goldberg shares something with Nan Goldin, a raw, documentary approach that invites us to be witnesses, and maybe even participants, in the ongoing conversation of life and art. It's not about answers, but about the questions we ask along the way.
