Suzuki Kiitsu painted "Huts" on silk as part of a triptych called "Three Evening Scenes." The composition evokes calm through its minimalist rendering of form and subtle gradation of color. The huts, rendered with dark, decisive brushstrokes, anchor the composition, contrasting with the muted tones of the sky and water. The artist's strategic deployment of empty space is critical. By allowing the muted gradations of the sky and sea to dominate, Kiitsu creates a serene, almost meditative atmosphere. The interplay between solid form and atmospheric void invites contemplation, reflecting Zen Buddhist principles of emptiness and awareness. Note the lower curve, which is both sand and the artist’s gesture. Kiitsu reminds us that painting is not only a representation, but also an act of mark-making. The artist challenges us to perceive beyond representation and to consider the brushstroke itself as a carrier of meaning.
