This page from "Art - Goût - Beauté, Feuillets de l' élégance féminine," was made in June 1929, by R. Drivon. It’s a fashion plate using watercolor and line. It’s all about suggestion and inference. These figures are defined by the bare minimum of marks. The colors create a sense of volume, but the real substance is in the line work, which is incredibly lively. Look closely at the skirts on the right-hand figure; see how those lines seem to dance and sway? The palette is muted, almost ghostly, and yet it's so evocative. The clothes feel almost like they are fading in front of you. It reminds us that art is often about what’s left unsaid, unpainted, and how much can be communicated with so little. It's a great example of the art of inference.
