This fashion plate, 'Art - Goût - Beauté,' was made by J. Dory in June 1929. It's delicate; you can see the artist's hand, how they carefully built up the images with light touches of colour. There's a beauty in the imperfections here; the lines aren't perfectly crisp, and the colours blend softly. It’s very different from a photograph. The texture of the paper shows through, reminding us of the physical act of creation. Notice the subtle shading and the way the colours interact – soft greys, muted reds, and gentle pinks. The artist uses these to create depth. I love the small details like the way the folds of the clothing are suggested with just a few strokes. It has an echo of artists like Christian Bérard, who worked in a similar style around the same time. Fashion plates like this weren't just about showing off clothes; they were about creating a mood, a feeling, and the sense of a modern woman of the time.
