Mathieu Lauweriks created this woodcut print, titled "Two Figures by a Tree," during a period when artists were deeply engaged in spiritual and symbolic exploration. Lauweriks, influenced by theosophy and geometric abstraction, presents us with a scene that feels both ancient and strikingly modern. The print depicts two stylized figures flanking a bare tree reaching towards a radiant sun. The figure on the left extends a hand, perhaps in offering or supplication. The one on the right stands passively, wrapped in what may be a robe. The eggs at their feet are symbols of germination and the beginning of life. Lauweriks' interest in universal order and spiritual harmony is evident here. The figures, stripped of individualizing features, become archetypes, embodiments of universal human experiences. The bare tree symbolizes both vulnerability and hope for renewal. The sun, a symbol of enlightenment and life-giving energy, is shown shining down on the figures. Through simple forms and symbolic language, Lauweriks invites us to reflect on our connection to nature, the cyclical nature of life, and the search for spiritual understanding.
