David Burliuk made this painting, "Countryside at Summer," with oil on canvas. The colours are bright, the brushstrokes are thick, and the whole thing feels really alive. I can imagine Burliuk outside, maybe sitting on a little stool with his paints all around him. The sun is warm, the air is fresh, and he's just trying to capture the feeling of being in the countryside. It's like he's wrestling with the paint, trying to get it to do what he wants, but also letting it do its own thing. I notice that the green colour is layered with blue and yellow. It makes me feel like I’m in the painting, smelling the grass, hearing the water, and feeling the warm breeze. It reminds me of other landscape painters, like the Impressionists, who were also trying to capture the feeling of being in nature. Painting is like having a conversation with other artists, both past and present. Each brushstroke is a little bit of your own voice, but it's also echoing the voices of all the artists who came before you.
