Pyotr Konchalovsky made "The boy in the park" with oil on canvas at an unknown date, and what strikes me is the energetic approach to mark making, like each dab of color is a decision, a little adventure. The painting has this rough, almost chunky texture, right? You can practically feel the bristles of the brush. It’s not trying to hide anything, it's all about the physicality of the paint. Look at the way he’s built up those greens and blues in the background, almost like he’s sculpting with color. The way the brown trunk rises up, anchoring the whole composition is just gorgeous. It's so alive, with all these little flicks and jabs of paint. It feels like the tree is breathing. Konchalovsky reminds me a bit of Cézanne, who was all about breaking things down and building them back up again. There's this sense that art is an ongoing conversation, and there are no fixed answers, just a constant exploration.
