Editor: Here we have Melchior Küsel's "View of the Gulf of Naples," an etching of modest dimensions. It feels like a stage, doesn't it, with the figures arranged so deliberately. What do you see in its composition? Curator: Indeed, the composition offers several points of interest. Notice how Küsel uses the strong diagonal of the wall to create depth, and how the hatching varies to simulate texture and shadow. The interplay of light and dark is quite striking, wouldn’t you agree? Editor: Absolutely, the contrast really defines the forms. It almost flattens the figures into silhouettes against the bright sky. I learned a lot looking at this piece. Thanks! Curator: It was my pleasure, and I concur. The formal elements provide a rewarding viewing experience.
