This sketchbook with 11 pages was made by Carel Adolph Lion Cachet, but we don't know exactly when. It's interesting to see the cover of a sketchbook as a work of art. There's an honesty to it, the brown cardboard cover with these accidental marks. Maybe they're not accidental, maybe the artist made them? Look at the way the specks and lines are scattered across the surface. There's a kind of controlled chaos to it, a sense of freedom in the way the marks are applied. Are they brushstrokes? Splatters? It's hard to tell, but they create a texture that is both random and deliberate. In that way it makes me think of Cy Twombly’s scribbled surfaces, only with much more restraint. The colour is muted, almost monochromatic, which adds to the sense of quiet contemplation. This isn't a finished painting, but a record of a creative process. It's a glimpse into the artist's mind, a reminder that art is not just about the final product, but about the journey of making.
