Editor: This is Serizawa Keisuke's "Calendar for 1955," one sheet from a twelve-sheet set. It feels so playful and graphic, a little retro. What do you see in it? Curator: I see a beautiful dance between tradition and modernity. The calendar is rendered in a style reminiscent of Japanese folk art, but with a distinctly modern sensibility. Notice the bold, flat planes of color, the simplified forms, and the almost whimsical arrangement of elements. What month do you suppose this calendar is for? Editor: Looking at the top, I'd guess January! Curator: Exactly! But more than just telling time, Serizawa is offering us a glimpse into a world where the past and present intertwine, wouldn't you agree? Editor: Definitely. It's a reminder that art can be both functional and deeply expressive, I like that.
