Koloman Moser drafted this furniture decoration for a bedroom with pencil, ink, and watercolour. The design is for a bedroom, so, obviously, it's an intimate space. I think Moser is working with a grid or pattern, using simple shapes and a muted palette to create a sense of order and harmony. The squares containing geometric shapes and stylized floral motifs are rendered in yellow, grey, and black. I imagine Moser playing with these forms, pushing and pulling them until they fit just right. He would repeat, invert, and combine to create something cohesive. I imagine the push and pull of the pencil across the paper. The act of building and layering is about a conversation between intention and accident, much like a dance. Moser is speaking to other artists of his day, but also to us, inviting us to see the world in new ways.
