Curator: I'm immediately struck by the overall feeling of melancholy and grotesque humor in this composition. There’s something almost carnivalesque about the figures’ exaggerated expressions. Editor: We’re looking at "Als het hammetje op is, dan moet men de kale benen wegslingeren," an engraving created between 1590 and 1594 by Hendrick Goltzius. It’s a wonderful example of Northern Renaissance printmaking. Curator: The title, "When the ham is finished, the bare bones must be thrown away," really adds to the work’s overall sentiment, hinting at darker meanings beneath the surface. The symbolism feels heavy, maybe cautionary? Editor: Absolutely. The inscription alludes to themes of wastefulness and the consequences of indulgence, pointing to issues around socio-economic disparities of the time, and it can easily resonate today, too. Notice the slumped posture of the central figure and the faces contorted with what seems like drunken sorrow. The bagpipes might indicate the empty promise of excess. Curator: Right. The small dog gnawing at a bone becomes incredibly significant. I imagine the dog has layers of interpretation, embodying loyalty or desperation, perhaps even representing those cast aside by the revelers at the table. What’s being depicted is far more than mere merriment, it’s a social commentary! Editor: And consider how Goltzius renders light and shadow! There is great use of texture to bring out all kinds of details that serve the story. Also, let’s not overlook that the central figure's leg chains. The symbolism certainly encourages discussions about the repercussions of extravagance, while suggesting what happens if these actions go on for too long. Curator: Yes, I also appreciate the use of common cultural signs and images in this period to teach some sort of moral lesson. The enduring power of Goltzius’s message invites the viewer to consider these complex themes while also enjoying some visual humor! Editor: This artwork offers a historical record and a continuing narrative on the darker shades of society. There's still so much to unpack about wealth and well-being, even centuries later!
