Jessica Stockholder made #291. Isn’t it interesting how a bunch of stuff—a blue plunger, an orange collection of upside down measuring cups, some plastic trays, a mirror, and a decorated cushion—can add up to something so much more? I can imagine Stockholder in her studio, surrounded by piles of colorful junk like this. Maybe she's thinking about how colors bounce off each other, how shapes can create a sense of balance or tension. I bet it was so fun to make! The way the orange cups fan out like a skirt is kind of funny. And the silver disc hangs there like a shiny thought bubble. It's like she's turning everyday objects into a playful, poetic composition, like a painter with a wild imagination. I can’t help but see a conversation with artists like Kurt Schwitters, who found beauty in the discarded. Artists are always in dialogue across time, responding to each other's creativity and inspiring new ways of seeing.
