This armchair was made at the Savonnerie Manufactory, known for its exquisite textiles. The seat and back are covered in tapestry, with a dense floral design, while the frame is carved from walnut. What’s most striking is the contrast between the tapestry and woodwork. The tapestry, created using a laborious weaving process, would have taken considerable time to produce, and the design itself required skilled artistry. The carved walnut frame also speaks to traditional craft. Notice the curves of the legs, the carved details where they join the seat. Both the tapestry and woodwork are deeply tactile. The tapestry has a soft, inviting texture, while the carved wood has a more robust, substantial feel. These material qualities aren’t just decorative; they speak to the amount of labor and skill that went into the chair's production. Ultimately, this armchair is a reminder that even the most functional objects can be elevated to the level of art through careful attention to materials and making, and in doing so also tell a story of labor and skill.
