Here we have Daniel Buren's Photo-souvenir: Three light boxes for one wall, though I don’t know exactly when it was made. What's immediately striking are these parallel bands of red and white. You know, Buren's known for these stripes. They’re like a visual constant throughout his work. I wonder what it’s like for him, returning to this motif again and again? Does it evolve? Does it provide comfort? It’s such a simple, clear structure. Those evenly spaced stripes create a rhythm that’s both calming and a little unsettling. I wonder, is it a painting? Is it architecture? Is it design? The use of light boxes also adds a layer of complexity, illuminating the stripes from within and transforming a 2D plane into something sculptural. These red and white bars also remind me of the work of Agnes Martin. All these artists are in conversation, I think.
