This is a film sheet by Robert Frank, a matrix of twelve frames, probably made in a studio on 57th Street for Harper’s Bazaar. The gray scale in this piece feels very physical, almost like you could touch it. The frames give a sense of time passing – the model shifts and turns, caught in different poses, like a dance. It’s a reminder that even in photography, there’s a process, a before and after. The light is so soft, with these gentle gradations – look how the shadows define her face in the center frames, it's amazing. And the texture of the film itself, those little imperfections and scratches, bring a sense of intimacy. This kind of sequencing reminds me of Duane Michals, another photographer who played with time and narrative. But Frank's got that raw, documentary edge that makes it distinctly his own. For me, it's a reminder that art is always about process, about the space between one moment and the next.
