Robert Frank made this intriguing collection of photographs, 'New York City, Wellfleet, Switzerland, and Early New York City,' and there is no date listed. But maybe that is on purpose. The photo strip is the final work, and this forces us to see the artistic process. It’s not just about the end result. It’s about the trying, the experimenting, the editing, the making. The black and white gives everything a timeless quality. Each frame is like a little world. The strip itself becomes a sort of map. Some of the images are sharp and clear, others are blurry. The composition is varied, some taken close up and others from a distance. These choices give the work a sense of rhythm, like the beats in a song. This reminds me of Gerhard Richter, whose work also embraced chance and the beauty of imperfection. It feels like art is a conversation, and everyone is invited to join.
