Louis de Boullongne the Younger created this study for a Baptism using black and white chalk on paper. During the artist’s time, the French court and academy were defining artistic and cultural standards. This drawing embodies the academic and classical traditions of the time, which favored idealized forms and historical or religious subjects. In this work, the representation of Christ is interesting when viewed through the lens of identity. Typically, depictions of Christ do not foreground the figure's physical form. Here, we see a nude Christ. The artist focuses on the male nude form, reminiscent of classical sculpture, and invites the viewer to consider aspects of Christ’s humanity and vulnerability. Note Christ’s posture, with his hands clasped in what seems like prayer. This imparts a sense of humility which shapes the reception of the drawing. The artist plays with both the divine and human aspects of Christ which encourages a more intimate and personal connection with the figure.
