This is a calling card written to Henriette Wilhelmina van Baak by Honoré Féa, dating from October 6th, 1930. What strikes me is the way the ink sits on the card, those dark brown marks, each with their own density. There’s a kind of physical dance happening between the pen, the ink, and the surface. The marks create a texture, a kind of landscape of emotion. You can almost feel the weight of the writer’s hand, the pauses, the swift movements. Look at the signature - those elegant looping flourishes, they feel like a performance. The whole thing is like a little drawing. Féa might be writing a polite note, but it's also an artwork of sorts. This connects with the work of Cy Twombly, who I think saw handwriting as a kind of drawing. Art's not about answers, it's about asking questions, it's about that space in between.
