This painting was made by Jeremy Moon, and well, it's Untitled so we can call it whatever we want. Look at the blues, reds, pinks, and yellows, each stripe a deliberate act, yet somehow the whole thing feels off-kilter, like a slightly out-of-tune instrument. I think Moon is letting the painting breathe, mistakes and all. Up close, you can see how the colors almost vibrate against each other. It's a push-and-pull, a visual argument that keeps the eye moving. There's a juicy redness to that thick stripe on the left, feels fleshy, almost like a tongue. And those edges! Not sharp, but soft, yielding. I love the way the white sneaks in at the bottom of the red stripe, feels like the painting is unfinished, but it's this quality that gives it its unique charm. This work feels like it comes from the same place as Bridget Riley's optical games; however, Moon is more interested in the imperfect and handmade.
