Victor Vasarely made this optical painting called OUR-2 using grayscale to really mess with your eyes. It’s fascinating how simple shapes like squares, circles, and triangles can create such a dynamic visual experience. The magic here is in the details. Look closely at the bottom right corner, how the squares gradually morph into parallelograms, it’s not just about the shapes themselves but how they play off each other, creating depth and movement where there’s really just a flat surface. The color palette, though limited, is so effective. The contrast between light and dark, the subtle gradations of gray – it all adds to the illusion. Vasarely, in a way, reminds me of Bridget Riley, another master of Op Art. Both artists share this interest in perception and how art can be more than just a pretty picture. It can be an experience, a puzzle, a conversation between what we see and what we think we see.
