Victor Vasarely made this painting Kara-Deu using clean shapes, stark contrast, and a burgundy background, and the way those white lozenges seem to vibrate against that red makes me think of Bridget Riley. I imagine Vasarely thinking about science and math when he made this piece. It must have been a very considered and painstaking process of arranging shapes, and negative space. I love how the shapes appear to swim and pulsate, almost coming alive before my eyes! These circles remind me of targets or lenses. What was he trying to focus on? What does he want us to see? I like the precision of the arrangement and the ambiguity of the image. Optical art is super interesting, and I always feel like it's both about the artwork itself, and how my body relates to the space it’s in.
