This photograph, showing the coast at Greve de Lecq on Jersey, was made by Delizy using a camera and darkroom techniques. Photography is often considered a technology, yet it’s also a craft. The tones and textures captured here depend entirely on the artist’s skill in the darkroom. Light, time, and chemical reactions were Delizy’s media, just as surely as clay is a potter’s. Think about the labor involved: the patient observation, the careful arrangement of the shot, and the expertise to coax the image into being. These are the critical means of production. Photography democratized image-making, yet even in a seemingly mechanical medium, the human hand and eye remain decisive. Recognizing this helps us see all art forms, even photography, as a product of skilled making.
