Jovana 2017

This is Dragan Ilić Di Vogo's painting of "Jovana," in which thin layers of paint are built up to create this portrait that feels like a dream, maybe one that Jovana herself is having. I can imagine Di Vogo starting with a traditional portrait, and then letting his imagination wander, adding these bizarre elements. What is going on with her hair, and how does it connect with her little dog friend? The butterfly on her head is such a sweet touch. I love the surreal quality and how there are floral and otherworldly elements around Jovana that bring a magical quality to the painting. It feels like her thoughts are coming to life. Painting can embrace ambiguity, leaving room for our multiple interpretations and imaginative leaps.
