This fashion plate, Très Parisien 1923, No. 4, is a reminder that artmaking is an ongoing conversation, a back-and-forth between line, color, and form. Look at how the anonymous artist used flat planes of color, almost like paper cut-outs. The mauve of the robe, that salmon pink peeking out from within the cape, feels so deliberate. It's like they're pushing and pulling against each other, fighting for space. There's a boldness in the drawing, too, a simple black outline around the figure. It's a kind of shorthand, but it gives the image a real punch. I'm reminded of Matisse’s paper cut-outs, that same feeling of pure, unadulterated color. Art is never created in a vacuum; it’s about taking what you see, responding to it, and pushing it in a new direction.
