This drawing of St Catherine with the Christ child and St Mary Magdalen was made by Giovanni Agostino Ratti in the 18th century, using pen and brown ink. During the 1700s, the church played a central role in the lives of the majority of Europeans, and in this sketch Ratti looks at the figures of three of its most important icons. Catherine, Mary, and the Christ child represent the central figures in the Holy Family. Looking closely at the image, we can imagine the sacred status of the figures represented, as well as reflect on the real, lived experiences of the women who have historically sought solace and inspiration through these archetypes. In what ways do the figures of the Saint, the Mother, and the Child resonate with your own experiences? What emotions does this image evoke?
