This photo album, made by Berti Hoppe, is a repository for 234 images of a holiday with Herman Besselaar in Vienna and Austria. The cover is so striking. A pale lilac alternates with bands of pale green, like a faded sweet shop. The cover is a kind of cloth, so you get the feeling of something soft and tactile. The weaving of the cloth adds another layer to the image, as if the colours are not quite fixed but bleed into one another. This bleeding effect softens the album and is reminiscent of pointillism. The green chord at the side feels so right, it's the final touch of care and colour. In a way, all art is a form of archiving, and this album reminds me of Gerhard Richter's Atlas project: personal images collated together to create a bigger picture. Both artists show us how the personal and the political are always entwined. Art is always a conversation, it’s about remembering and looking.
