This untitled artwork was created in 1998 by Ivan Tovar, who was born in 1942. Tovar, of Dominican descent, has always drawn on his cultural heritage to inform his art. Here, Tovar uses delicate lines to suggest the human form, specifically breasts. During the late 20th century there was a huge increase in awareness of social justice issues, so Tovar’s artwork can be seen as a part of the ongoing dialogue on representation. He challenges societal norms and expectations around femininity and how women’s bodies are viewed and portrayed. Are these lines and shapes merely abstract forms or do they hold deeper symbolic meaning? This piece invites us to engage with the themes of femininity and representation, and to explore our own emotional responses. What does this artwork mean to you?
