Avigdor Arikha made this drawing, "Anemones," using ink on paper. It might seem like a straightforward still life, but look closely and you will notice the density of marks. Arikha was known for working only from direct observation, in single sittings. This approach required intense focus, and he deliberately avoided preparatory sketches. Notice how the immediacy of the medium, combined with the artist's approach, results in an image that feels both ephemeral and substantive. The texture of the paper, the fluidity of the ink, all contribute to the rich tonality. The stark monochrome palette reinforces the dynamic tension between representation and abstraction, like he is on the verge of making something out of very little, while also acknowledging the inherent qualities of the materials. By emphasizing process, Arikha elevates the status of drawing, placing it on par with painting. This challenges conventional distinctions between different artistic mediums, encouraging us to appreciate the skill and thought involved in the work.
